RYAN BROWN

“TITLE OF WORK”

This sculptural work explores the cultural nuances embedded within African American identity, drawing from my personal experience growing up Black in America. Many moments of our lived experience go unnoticed by the broader world, yet within our community, they are deeply familiar and recognizable. The images, printed on metal plates, symbolize the weight of history—both the burdens we carry and the resilience we embody. The use of gold speaks to Black Americans’ relationship with materiality, transforming the past into something revered and monumental. By elevating these narratives onto a pedestal-like form, I emphasize their significance, much like a commemorative plaque, reinforcing the lasting impact of our presence and contributions.
