JESSIE LEI
“24”
This project is a visual exploration of fragmented memories of my mother, who passed away from cancer when I was 13 months old. Now, having reached the same age she was when she died, I find myself navigating a complex mixture of emotions—an age that feels both too young and yet somehow profound. My memories of her are limited, and she left me no tangible things. However, I find solace and a sense of connection in the Chinese saying “身体发肤,受之父母” (“The body, hair, and skin are received from our parents”). My own body becomes a reminder of her presence, a bridge between her life and mine.
In this series, I am exploring my relationship with the mother I never knew by photographing her favorite flower, the lily, and making self-portraits. Through these images, I seek to connect with her spirit and presence, with the only tools left at my disposal.
